I think skinning is the best gathering skill to have to make money.  Unlike money or herblism, it doesn't require extra time to hunt for stuff...you get leather off of killing things you already are going to kill anyway.  So in your hunt for leather, you get loot and xp.  Its more of a bulk thing,  you need more leather then some mining item, but you also get it quicker and its easier to farm too.

I agree.  And other professions use leather as well.  For example, my stepson is an engineer, and he needs leather also.

Light leather is going to be the hardest to sell because it is the lowest grade of leather.

Think about it. Of every alt that starts skinning, all of them will get light leather. Of those, a slightly smaller number will move on to medium leather, because some people will stop playing their alt, quit wow, or change professions. And a slightly smaller number will move on to heavy leather, and so on. Not only is light leather the easiest to find, it is the most abundant and the market is flooded.

Just keep selling it, and you will make a nice sum of money, especially if you are not a leatherworker because you will find so much leather. As you move up, eventually you will be able to sell stacks of heavy and thick leather for at least a gold. And on my server, rugged leather goes for around 10 gold.

Skinning and fishing are best money makers. I can sit and fish certain spots for 5 hours and make somewhere near 300g. Only say thing is i can hit a gold seller and spend $15 for 300g. and in my current RL Profession i make alot more than $5 an hour.

So the real money maker is go get a better job and buy gold.
I hate saying it but its true. Since it takes the fun out of the game like it did with Ultima Online i suggest fishing and skinning. My hunter in a given 1 day playing will make 1000 gold.

the best thing to do is hit up low level areas where people arent 100% familiar with crafting and follow behind them skinning their kills. I picked up 700 light leather one afternoon just following lowbies around. as a 65 hunter they thought it was kool that id kill the mobs if they got in trouble, as a skinner i felt bad that i was making gold off their kills......MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This post is faded because it has a negative score.

Following a player and skinning behind is a great way to farm.  The player is getting credit for the kill and loot items so those items will not fill your own bags...then you get the skin.  If the player himself/herself is not skinning, they might be miners or working on herbalism so they don't need the skins anyways.

i just matters if you want to be a crafter or gatherer. I took up skining and mining and made tons of gold.got them both to 375. skinning in outland is a big moneymaker. just look at the prices of knothide leather in the auction house. at level 70 i decided to craft. dropped skinning and picked up jewelcrafing. took about 2 weeks for me to get to 375. being a 375 miner and level 70 i can go anywhere to get the ore needed. but as for skinning, yes you can make alot of cash. been there done that.

I find skinning a real money spinner, especially when combined with beast killing quests like the ones in STV. I also find that just travelling from one location to another in a beast filled area can get me loads of leather, skinning discarded kills.
